General Sherman giant sequoia tree, SEQUOIADENDRON GIGANTEUM; largest tree in world in volume, In the heart of California’s Sierra Nevada is one of the most awe-inspiring sights: The giant sequoia groves in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The soft colors of sunset reflect off the snow, creating this breathtakingly beautiful shot from Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. Christian Schaffer snapped this pic a few months ago when the park’s snowpack was over 8 feet high. Of the experience, she says, “It was so incredibly beautiful and also incredibly cold – all of our electronics died while we were out there except my one camera battery. Mist rises from Ahwahnee Meadow on a cold winter morning in Yosemite National Park, creating a dreamy blue scene. While Half Dome wears a light dusting of snow, other areas of the park received more than 200 inches – or almost 17 feet – so far this winter! Walking in the deep snow can be difficult. Bison use their strong necks to push forward and make a path, their shaggy faces keep them from getting too cold and they take turns leading the way. Eagle Lake Recreation Area, part of the Lassen National Forest, is 5,100 feet above sea level in northeast California and subject to harsh winter conditions. Having no natural surface outlet, Eagle Lake is a closed basin lake with its water levels fluctuating with variations of inflow. In the shadow of Wheeler Peak in Great Basin National Park, Nevada, 5,000-year-old bristlecone pine trees grow on rocky glacial moraines. Colorado National Monument preserves one of the grand landscapes of the American West. It preserves towering monoliths within a vast plateau and canyon panorama. Magnificent views from highland trails and the Rim Rock Drive stretch from the colorful sheer-walled canyons and fascinating rock sculptures to the distant Colorado River valley.
