If you’ve never seen the sunset at Great Smoky Mountains National Park (located in both North Carolina and Tennessee), you’ve been missing out. If you have seen one, you’re probably dreaming of the next one. The gentle curves of the forested mountains, the rising fog in the hollows and the glowing colors painting the cloudscape create a scene so beautiful, you’ll never forget it. Photo by Rick Sereque. Sunrise in the Appalachian Mountains can be an awe-inspiring sight. Sitting on an ancient rock and breathing in the cool mountain air, the beauty of Shenandoah National Park in Virginia unfolds before you as the first rays of sun sweep down into green valleys and misty hollows. No matter how many times you see it, it never gets old. Photo by N. Lewis, National Park Service. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 5/19/17.

Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park is the largest hot spring in the United States and the third largest in the world. It’s almost 370 feet in diameter and 121 feet deep. Its vibrant color is the result of thermophilic (heat loving) organisms living along the edges of the steaming pool. This unique ecosystem is delicate and dangerous. To protect it and yourself, stay on the boardwalks when visiting. Sunset photo by Manish Mamtani. Tweeted by the US Department of the Interior, 5/6/17.

This picture of Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve in Colorado is a perfect combination of stone, sand, snow and light. The Sangre de Cristo (“Blood of Christ”) Mountains were named by early explorers for the crimson light that often appears on them at sunrise or sunset. The red color is especially vivid when the mountains and dunes are covered with snow. Photo by Patrick Myers, National Park Service. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 2/5/17.
You can never see too many sunsets on the Blue Ridge Parkway. After the first snow in Virginia this winter, photographer Brandon Dewey drove out to capture the sights. “The sky normally lights up once the sun dips behind the mountain ridges, but this night, there wasn’t that much color. About 20 minutes after sunset, I was just about to pack up my gear when the sky finally caught on fire for less than two minutes.” Photo by Brandon Dewey, Brandon Dewey Photography (www.bdeweyphoto.com).
