Every March, thousands of Sandhill cranes stop in Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve on their way to their northern breeding grounds. The fields and wetlands of Colorado’s San Luis Valley provide excellent habitat for these majestic birds. With the dunes and mountains nearby, they dance and call to each other. It’s one of nature’s great spectacles. Sunrise. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 3/11/16.

It doesn’t get much better than the views found at Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. With seemingly unlimited vistas to the east and west, it is popular for both sunrise and sunset. This sunrise looks even better with some snow catching the dawn’s early light. Photo by Steve Perry. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 12/17/15.

A magical moonrise over Yosemite National Park in California. Matt Walker captured this night shot – yes, it’s a night shot – on Thanksgiving week. It had snowed all day and began clearing around sunset. An hour later, the full moon rose with an intense glow as fog and clouds swirled around Yosemite Valley. “It was an amazing experience having my 10-year-old son next to me watching this unbelievable moonrise,” says Walker. Featuring a half-mile deep geologic amphitheater and bristlecone pines more than 1,000 years old, Cedar Breaks National Monument in Utah is worth a visit. Due to its high altitude, winters can be extreme, so services are limited. The Scenic Drive usually closes in mid-November after the first heavy snowfall, but there are great trails for cross-country skiers and snowmobiles. Photo by Jay Wanta. Posted on Tumblr 10/23/15.

When the sun rises over St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in October, it is greeted by autumn wildflowers, migrating butterflies and a great variety of birds. Northern harriers hunt over the refuge marshes, careful to avoid the alligators. It is a beautiful and peaceful place, found on the border of fresh and saltwater marshes in northern Florida.
