Snow decorates the desert under a dreamy night sky at California’s Joshua Tree National Park. To survive, Joshua trees depend on perfect conditions, including a crisp winter freeze – researchers believe that freezing temperatures may first damage the growing end of a branch and then stimulate flowering, followed by branching. Christian Schaffer snapped this pic a few months ago when the park’s snowpack was over 8 feet high. Of the experience, she says, “It was so incredibly beautiful and also incredibly cold – all of our electronics died while we were out there except my one camera battery. The cold was worth it though; one of the most amazing sunsets I’ve ever seen.” Photo courtesy of Christian Schaffer. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 3/6/16.
