Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is one of the few places on Earth where visitors can safely get an upclose look at an active volcano. National parks preserve some of the most unique landscapes in America. Visitors to Badlands National Park in South Dakota are often shocked at the sudden appearance of these colorful formations rising out of the surrounding green plains. The rock formations and amazing fossil beds give us important evidence of the dramatic natural history of the area. Just another reason why national parks are great outdoor classrooms! Photographer Matthew Newman says his nighttime adventure forever changed the way he experiences nature: “Making a seven-mile snowshoe hike round trip in the middle of the night to try and capture the Aurora Borealis and Milky Way from this location was amazing.” Photo by Matthew Newman. The soft colors of sunset reflect off the snow, creating this breathtakingly beautiful shot from Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. Christian Schaffer snapped this pic a few months ago when the park’s snowpack was over 8 feet high. Of the experience, she says, “It was so incredibly beautiful and also incredibly cold – all of our electronics died while we were out there except my one camera battery. The cold was worth it though; one of the most amazing sunsets I’ve ever seen.” Photo courtesy of Christian Schaffer. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 3/6/16.
