The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is the largest intact remnant of a vast habitat that once covered more than one million acres of southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The 112,000-acre Refuge is home to forests, marsh land and Lake Drummond – one of only two natural lakes in Virginia. Photo of Lake Drummond at twilight courtesy of Tom Hamilton. Lassen Volcanic National Park in California is home to steaming fumaroles, meadows freckled with wildflowers, clear mountain lakes and numerous volcanoes. David Olden captured this breathtaking shot of the park at sunset. Of the experience, he says: “Some memories in life are etched into our mind, sometimes we’re lucky enough to realize that while we are experiencing the moment. This was one of those moments for me. Not a soul in sight as I sat and watched the sky change colors over Helen Lake with Lassen Peak behind it.” Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 5/16/15.
