Over thousands of years, Lake Superior carved out caves in the sandstone cliffs of the Wisconsin lakeshore. Today, when conditions are right, you can hike out across the solid water (ice) and see these remarkable formations clad in snow and ice at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. In the shadow of Wheeler Peak in Great Basin National Park, Nevada, 5,000-year-old bristlecone pine trees grow on rocky glacial moraines. The area boasts some of the darkest night skies left in the United States, making for some great stargazing. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 12/30/15.
Low fog through Yosemite Valley and bright stars created this amazing moment at Yosemite National Park in California. Toby Harriman snapped this photo from the park’s Tunnel View. His favorite part of the photo: The climber’s headlamp that is visible mid way up El Capitan on the left. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 1/2/16.
Colorado National Monument preserves one of the grand landscapes of the American West. It preserves towering monoliths within a vast plateau and canyon panorama. Magnificent views from highland trails and the Rim Rock Drive stretch from the colorful sheer-walled canyons and fascinating rock sculptures to the distant Colorado River valley. You might even see a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Photo by Amy Hudechek. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 1/3/16.

Owyhee Canyonlands Wilderness Leave a comment
The Owyhee Canyonlands Wilderness features unique rhyolite pinnacle formations known as “hoodoos,” cold-water streams, and canyons ranging in height from 250 to over 1000 feet. This remote and rugged landscape has outstanding opportunities for solitude, very low levels of human impacts, and primitive recreational opportunities.
The Bruneau-Jarbidge River System flows north from the mountains of northern Nevada through the basalt and rhyolite canyons of the Owyhee Uplands to the Snake River in southern Idaho. Nearly 40 floatable miles of the Bruneau River are designated as wild and scenic.

Sunset sets the sky ablaze at Waubay National Wildlife Refuge in South Dakota. The refuge is located in the prairie pothole region, one of the largest and most important breeding areas for ducks and migratory birds in North America. Artist George Catlin described the area as a “blue and boundless ocean of prairie.” It also has abundant lakes, marshes and woodlands. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 3/13/15.
