One of President Obama’s final acts in January was to expand the California Coastal National Monument. Tweeted by the US Department of the Interior, 1/12/17.
In January, a 22-acre section of a lava delta in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park broke apart and sank into the ocean causing the closing of a viewing area. Now, from the new viewing area, visitors can witness a “fire hose” of lava streaming into the ocean. The molten rock sends huge clouds of steam and gas into the air as it hits the Pacific. It’s a sight you’ll never forget. Photos by National Park Service. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 1/13/17.

Established in 2000, California Coastal National Monument includes public lands along the coast of California and in the near shore waters of the Pacific Ocean. Providing unique coastal habitat for marine-dependent wildlife and vegetation on more than 20,000 rocks, islands, exposed reefs and pinnacles, it also offers gorgeous natural beauty to all its visitors. The small community of Big Pine California is best known as a jumping-off point to popular trailheads in the Eastern Sierra. But just over the pass to the east of town is a dramatic desert landscape visited by few people and full of surprises — the 72,000-acre Piper Mountain Wilderness. The Piper, Sylvania and Inyo Mountains meet in this area of colorful rock formations and vast desert landscapes. One of the northernmost stands of Joshua Trees can be viewed in the northeast part of the wilderness along with sagebrush and piñon-juniper woodlands. Lucky visitors might spot a desert bighorn sheep in one of the canyons. BLM Wilderness Specialist Bob Wick shows here that perhaps the area’s best feature is its night skies. Far from any major towns or other developments, the pristine dark skies reveal seemingly countless stars and bright swath of the Milky Way in a nightly show.
