Purple(,) Mountains Majesty   Leave a comment

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park in Alaska is a true wilderness filled with mountains, glaciers, historic sites, and several living cultures. A trip here can be quite different from a park in the lower 48. Flexibility and patience are required – visitor services are limited, access can be challenging, weather varies widely – but the reward is worth the effort! Photo courtesy of Jacob W. Bowen Pass Sunrise   Leave a comment

Sometimes the most fleeting of sunrises are the most beautiful. Crystal Brindle captured this stunner near Bowen Pass at North Cascades National Park in Washington. It was her last sunrise as a ranger in the park’s backcountry. It was definitely a memory that’ll last a lifetime. Photo courtesy of Crystal Brindle. The Rae Lakes Loop is one of the most popular hikes in the co-managed Kings Canyon & Sequoia National Parks in California. The trail is 41.4 miles long and climbs more than 6,000 feet. Along the way, you travel through just about every Alpine climate zone and see canyons, high alpine lakes and breathtaking vistas. Photo by Vivek Vijaykumar. Oh, That Rainbow   Leave a comment

Summer at Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve in Alaska is short but sweet. Vibrant colors radiate during long days and caribou, bears, wolves, muskox and fox roam the landscape past mountains and rivers yet to be named. With no roads or trails, the remote park demands visitors to be self-sufficient. The beauty and solitude is their reward. Photo by National Park Service. Take the road less traveled to Capitol Reef National Park. For Michelle Olmstead, Capitol Reef is her favorite Utah national park because it’s possible to find solitude that can sometimes be lacking in other parks. “After hiking all day we were rewarded with this beautiful golden-hour light hitting the red rock as we were leaving. I feel very grateful to be able to experience these beautiful public lands with the ones I love.“ Photo courtesy of Michelle Olmstead. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 5/26/17.
