If you’ve never seen the sunset at Great Smoky Mountains National Park (located in both North Carolina and Tennessee), you’ve been missing out. If you have seen one, you’re probably dreaming of the next one. The gentle curves of the forested mountains, the rising fog in the hollows and the glowing colors painting the cloudscape create a scene so beautiful, you’ll never forget it. Photo by Rick Sereque. Groundhogs have short ears and a short tail, and can weigh up to 11 pounds. They have two layers of fur: A dense grey undercoat and a longer coat of banded guard hairs that gives the groundhog a “frosted” appearance. Despite how they look, groundhogs are good swimmers and tree climbers. Photo of a groundhog eating a flower at Shenandoah National Park by National Park Service. Spectacular sunrises are a fantastic way to start an adventure in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. Photographer Elliott Cliborne captured this brilliant photo at the top of Mary’s Rock, where a 3.7-round trip hike along the Appalachian Trail leads to expansive views. Of the experience, says Cliborne: “It was by far the best sunrise I experienced in over 400 miles of hiking last summer.” Photo courtesy of Elliott Cliborne. Fall color in Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park. Tweeted by the US Department of the Interior, 10/19/15.
Quaking aspens provide beautiful scenery and a rich habitat for wildlife. Aspen, the most widely distributed tree in North America, are one of the few deciduous trees hearty enough to survive in a harsh environment of Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. One of the most striking characteristics of the aspen is the beautiful splashes of fall color it adds to the mountainsides. This magical color change starts in early September and can last into October. Photo courtesy of Jacob W. Frank. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 10/22/15.
Mt. Moran, 12605′, 4th highest peak in the Teton Range, Grand Teton National Park, WY. The Skillet Glacier descends on the east face, seen here, with aspens in autumn in the foreground, as storm clouds gather in the distance. Grand Teton National Park is a must-see in the fall! Aspen tree leaves blaze mostly yellow and orange (and occasionally red) shades during autumn, creating a dramatic contrasting with the towering Teton Range in the background.
