A Family Heirloom

It’s been a tumultuous year. The 5th year of the blog saw me address politics more than ever before – if only to get people to stop talking about politics.

No one ever accused me of being effective at that, by the way.

Other posts were about woodworking, some about going a-vendoring, and I even managed to sneak one post in about family history.

I hope you found some topics to enjoy along the way, and if you missed any of these posts, then, please, enjoy!

Wild Mushroom Cobbler

The blog is 5. Can you believe it?

Actually, the date slipped past me, as I was engaged with other priorities, so this celebration of 5-hood had to wait a couple of weeks. But, to the meat of the matter:

  • Of these 15 posts, 10 were also on last year’s list of most read posts. I’m thinking when it’s good, then it’s evergreen. And once you start to move up on the Google machine’s algorithm, then everything takes care of itself.
  • For the fourth year in a row, Velda’s recipe for Wild Mushroom Cobbler is the most read post on this blog. How many times was I served that award-winning recipe in Year 5? Zero.

With absolutely no hope that this situation will change anytime soon, here are the most read posts from the fifth year of MowryJournal.com:

Installing Oneida’s V3000 Dust Collection System

MowryJournal.com is now 4!

Only one of my favorite posts from this past year also appeared on the “most read” list that was posted yesterday … and that post was about installing my new Dust Collection System. This post was linked by a reader on the woodworking Reddit forum, and it went viral from there.

I’m happy that many people found that post worthwhile, but I’m actually a lot more excited that the V3000 has made such a huge improvement in the air quality in the shop! That’s why that installation was so important; the blog post just documented that importance, and other people are interested. That’s a good thing.

The first 2 threads that I see in this collection of favorite posts are that I like writing about learning, and I’m doing a lot in the garage woodshop.

And I don’t see those trends changing any time soon.

Just like the other common thread that’s here: family. Also, not changing any time soon. Right?

Here are my favorite blog posts from the past 12 months. If you missed some of these good reads along the way, please enjoy!

Wild Mushroom Cobbler

“The winner … and STILL champeen … Wild Mushroom Cobbler!”

For the 3rd year in row, Velda’s recipe has been the most read post on MowryJournal.com. Two quick facts result:

  1. If you haven’t made this recipe yet, then you are missing out.
  2. Velda made this recipe only once this past year, and I’m the poorer for it.

Wild Mushroom Cobbler

Wild Mushroom Cobbler

Yes, MowryJournal has been kicking along merrily for 2 years now. Who knew I could stick with something that long? (ed. note: married for 36 years. One job for 22 years. You get the idea.).

Here are the most read posts from the last 12 months, according to the statistics provided by WordPress. Don’t get me started on the accuracy of online metrics … but this is probably a very good approximation of what people decided to read in the last year.

6 of the 15 are from the Portraits series on Presidents … so people DID read those, even if none of those readers are related to me. 5 of these 15 were also on the most read list from year one … which must mean I was twice as good of a writer in year 2. Hey, it’s my blog, and that’s the way I see it.

Meanwhile, if you missed a few along the way, dig in!
