Alaska’s Glacier Bay is a living laboratory, a designated wilderness, a biosphere reserve and a world heritage site. It’s a marine park, where great adventure awaits by boating into inlets, coves and close to its dynamic, namesake glacier. It’s also a land park, with its snow-capped mountains, spectacular glaciers and vast forests. Photo by National Park Service. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 4/10/17.

Winter has come to Lake Clark National Park & Preserve in Alaska and left it wrapped in white and blue. Besides water and sky, every feature is coated with snow and frost – obscured by a wispy fog and lingering clouds. It’s peaceful, beautiful and cold enough to make your teeth chatter. Photo by J. Mills, National Park Service. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 12/2/16.
Sunrise breaks the winter chill at Acadia National Park in Maine. As you admire the snow reflecting the morning light and listen to the waves lap at the stony shoreline, feel the warmth of another day welcome you to this beautiful place. Park Loop Road has closed for the season, but Ocean Drive remains open as conditions allow. Happy exploring! Photo by Rebecca Wilks. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 12/19/16.

Imagine how small you might feel in the presence of a huge iceberg like this chunk from the McBride Glacier. At Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve – one of the 24 national park sites in Alaska – you can explore the Alaskan wilderness from sea to summit. True to its name, much of the park is water, meaning kayaks and boats are the main ways to see rugged mountains, dynamic glaciers and wild coastlines. Photo by Sean Neilson, National Park Service. After nearly disappearing decades ago from most of the United States, the bald eagle is now flourishing across the nation. Seeing this majestic bird is always a special treat. With a wingspan of 8 feet, watching them soar or hearing their distinctive call will stir your spirit. The northern hawk owl is an especially dangerous predator if you’re a rodent, shrew or small bird. Hawk owls can spot their next meal from half a mile away, and have excellent hearing. From the top branches of a tall spruce tree, they can hear and locate their prey under a full twelve inches of snow. They hunt during both night and day, and typically do not occur in the lower 48. From the Park’s Facebook page.
Wolves are opportunistic animals and will make an appearance in populated areas from time to time, to capitalize on an easy meal. A wolf pack’s territory can range up to 1,000 miles, and they have been known to travel even further in pursuit of caribou herds. From Katmai National Park’s Facebook page.

Larger than Switzerland, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve in Alaska is our nation’s biggest national park. Four mountain ranges run through it, with nine of the 16 highest peaks in the country. Its Malaspina glacier is bigger than the state of Rhode Island, and the possibilities for adventure are endless. Ten years ago, Augustine volcano in Alaska swelled, rumbled and erupted. A gigantic cloud of ash rose above the mountain and two lava flows crawled down its sides. The eruption resulted in ash fall throughout south-central Alaska and disrupted air traffic over the state. Historically, Augustine volcano has been the most active volcano in Alaska’s Cook Inlet region with recent eruptions in 1976, 1986 and 2006. Photo by Cyrus Read of the US Geological Survey.
