Comprised of 4 million acres in southwest Alaska, Lake Clark National Park and Preserve is one of the nation’s most remote national parks. Winter conditions add more challenges to those wanting to explore this gorgeous and diverse landscape, but as you can see, the backcountry scenes are worth the cold. Winter has come to Lake Clark National Park & Preserve in Alaska and left it wrapped in white and blue. Besides water and sky, every feature is coated with snow and frost – obscured by a wispy fog and lingering clouds. It’s peaceful, beautiful and cold enough to make your teeth chatter. Photo by J. Mills, National Park Service. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 12/2/16.
Sunrise breaks the winter chill at Acadia National Park in Maine. As you admire the snow reflecting the morning light and listen to the waves lap at the stony shoreline, feel the warmth of another day welcome you to this beautiful place. Alaska has been called “The Last Frontier,” and at Lake Clark National Park and Preserve that holds true. This backcountry park – accessible by boat or aircraft – has no roads or campgrounds and only one hiking trail. For the intrepid few who reach this remote gem, solitude reigns in a land of immense glaciers, active volcanoes and boreal forests. Mink in Alaska are larger and darker than most weasels. They can hunt on land and water, preying on fish, rodents, birds and insects. Mostly solitary, they only gather during breeding season in the spring. However, this mink at Lake Clark National Park & Preserve doesn’t seem to be thinking about romance. Photo by J. Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Maine is a great place to find peace and connect with nature on a quiet stroll, catching glimpses of bird and bunnies in the woods and on the beach. Just before it flows past Washington, DC, the Potomac River builds up speed and force as it falls over a series of steep, jagged rocks and rushes through a narrow gorge. Great Falls Park offers tremendous views of this powerful, natural spectacle. Hikers enjoy several trails along the river and sometimes gasp at expert kayakers who brave the falls. Mount St. Elias looms over Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve, our nation’s biggest national park. With towering mountains, county sized glaciers, diverse wildlife and scenery like this, it’s no surprise that this Alaska park is also a World Heritage site. It doesn’t reveal its wonders easily, but for the adventurous spirit, the rewards are limitless. This image is from a recent flyover of the park by the National Park Service. Witnessing sunrise from Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is truly breathtaking. Kathleen Buenviaje took this photo of Reflection Canyon on the Utah side of the park just as the sun was breaking through the horizon, turning the sky into a kaleidoscope of colors. Kathleen captured the photo after a 10-mile backpacking trip through the Utah backcountry in thunderstorms and 30 degree weather. Of the experience, she says, “The hike was grueling with no trail to follow and the terrain shifting every hundred feet, but it was also one of the most unique and beautiful hikes because of those challenges. Not a hike for the faint of heart, but a worthy one for anyone who makes it.” Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 9/10/15.
