A natural wonderland created by stone and erosion, Utah’s Arches National Park offers unforgettable experiences. When visiting the park this summer, photographer Derek Cronk looked up and saw a shimmering rainbow framed in the massive window of Delicate Arch. “I felt lucky to be in such an incredible location as it was, but it took my breath away to be presented with such an amazing opportunity.” Lucky and good is a great combination. The ice caves at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Wisconsin. Accessible by foot when Lake Superior freezes over – which doesn’t happen every year – the caves are like a palace decorated with hanging blue ice formations. Photo by Wan Shi. A trip to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming isn’t complete without viewing the majestic Lower Falls. When visiting the park in 2012, Stuart Burnett and his wife Patti captured this shot of Lower Falls legendary rainbow thanks to detailed research and planning. Of the experience, Stuart says, “You could hear the gasp from the other viewers as the rainbow formed. It was just magnificent!! It lasted for about 10 minutes … 10 minutes that I will never forget!!” Photo courtesy of Stuart Burnett. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 7/3/16.
Acadia National Park in Maine is known for its sunrises. The park is one of the first places to see the sunrise in the U.S., but its sunsets are also stunning! Photographer James Kaiser captured this magical view from the top of Cadillac Mountain after a rainy day: “Even when things seem gloomy, conditions can quickly change. It’s one of nature’s most important lessons, and national parks help us appreciate it firsthand.” Photo courtesy of James Kaiser. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 8/2/16.

Over thousands of years, Lake Superior carved out caves in the sandstone cliffs of the Wisconsin lakeshore. Today, when conditions are right, you can hike out across the solid water (ice) and see these remarkable formations clad in snow and ice at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. In the shadow of Wheeler Peak in Great Basin National Park, Nevada, 5,000-year-old bristlecone pine trees grow on rocky glacial moraines. The area boasts some of the darkest night skies left in the United States, making for some great stargazing. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 12/30/15.
Low fog through Yosemite Valley and bright stars created this amazing moment at Yosemite National Park in California. Toby Harriman snapped this photo from the park’s Tunnel View. Olympic National Park in Washington. About 100 miles from Seattle, Olympic is a place of beauty and variety. Untamed rivers flow from glacier-capped peaks through valleys of old-growth forests, waves crash against a shoreline rich with life, and only trails traverse the vast interior of this internationally recognized wilderness. Pictured here is sunrise from the park’s Second Beach. Photo by Glenn Nelson. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 6/1/15.

Rainbows are a fan favorite in Yosemite National Park, commonly seen along the park’s flowing waterfalls on sunny days. Halos and coronas around the sun or moon are also a typical sight. Recently, a lucky visitor was able to spot and capture this rare occurrence –cloud iridescence – over Glacier Point. This optical phenomenon is caused when sunlight diffracts off tiny ice crystals or water droplets and creates a rainbow effect. Iridescent clouds typically occur in late afternoons in hot and humid weather. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 6/28/15.
