Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area   Leave a comment

The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area (the BLM loves their unique designations) is located at the confluence of the Loxahatchee River and Indian River Lagoon, just ¼ mile from the Atlantic Ocean in southeastern Florida.

In January, Jupiter’s average daily temperatures are in the high 70’s. With balmy air temperatures and a warm ocean (around 78 degrees this time of year), the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse makes the list if you’re looking to escape to year-round summer on public lands.

A range of recreation activities are offered, from exploring the cultural and military history associated with the historic 1860 lighthouse to strolling the sites trails to discover a small fragment of natural Florida. For the more adventurous, kayaking the shoreline and exploring its lagoon offer unique views of the lighthouse and the opportunity to get close to manatees – who also spend their winters here.

Cutting Boards, Cheese Boards, and Small Boards   Leave a comment

Handcrafted 1It’s a new year … and I’ve already been busy.

I really didn’t have a choice. The end of 2014 was very successful for Mrs. M’s Handmade … and my inventory of cutting boards and cheese boards was depleted in December. I’ve spent the last week working in the shop, and I’ve got several new boards, and new designs, in development.

Meanwhile, here are the first 16 boards completed in 2015 … just in time for our first event, at SCV Junction in Hart Park this weekend. Would love to see you there!

The small pictures don’t do justice to the lovely wood I’m working with here. Click on the pictures to enlarge them … the cherry and honey locust is some of the prettiest that I’ve seen. Please, enjoy!

Star Filter   3 comments

It’s a pretty photo, certainly.

But must we use a star filter whenever we photograph a pretty sunrise?

Colorado National Monument preserves one of the grand landscapes of the American West. But this treasure is much more than a monument. Towering monoliths exist within a vast plateau and canyon panorama. You can experience sheer-walled, red rock canyons along the twists and turns of Rim Rock Drive, where you may spy bighorn sheep and soaring eagles. Photo: William Woodward.
