Velda will love this post: her recipe for Wild Mushroom Cobbler is the post that was read the most over the last 12 months. That post has been re-pinned several times on Pinterest, and it’s gone viral from there.
And the world is eating better, if they’re following that recipe!
Most of these posts have gone viral, actually. “How To Be Unemployable” was picked up by a Dutch news service, for example. It’s a big world out there.

The small community of Big Pine California is best known as a jumping-off point to popular trailheads in the Eastern Sierra. But just over the pass to the east of town is a dramatic desert landscape visited by few people and full of surprises — the 72,000-acre Piper Mountain Wilderness. The Piper, Sylvania and Inyo Mountains meet in this area of colorful rock formations and vast desert landscapes. One of the northernmost stands of Joshua Trees can be viewed in the northeast part of the wilderness along with sagebrush and piñon-juniper woodlands. Lucky visitors might spot a desert bighorn sheep in one of the canyons. BLM Wilderness Specialist Bob Wick shows here that perhaps the area’s best feature is its night skies. Far from any major towns or other developments, the pristine dark skies reveal seemingly countless stars and bright swath of the Milky Way in a nightly show. Colorful vine maples adorn the basalt monolith of Oregon’s Table Rock Wilderness. A 3.3 mile long trail with a modest grade climbs through stately forest past tall basalt cliffs before topping out at drop-dead gorgeous viewpoints stretching from high Cascade Peaks to the Willamette Valley. Table Rock stands at 4,881 feet above sea level and has a rich forest of Douglas fir and western hemlock, with noble fir at higher elevations. At least two endangered plants bloom here: Oregon sullivantia and Gorman’s aster. Deer and elk wander about its slopes, and the northern spotted owl have been seen among the old trees. From four trailheads, about 17 miles of trails give access to the Wilderness. Photo by Bob Wick, BLM. Posted on Instagram by the U Department of the Interior, 6/15/15.
Sometime it’s all about being at the right place at the right time. Case in point: This amazing photo of what appears to be Yosemite National Park’s Half Dome on fire. While photographing sunrise at the park, Austin Jenanyan noticed a cloud forming around Half Dome. It eventually morphed into the shape of a flame and was illuminated by the early morning light. It only lasted a few short moments, but Austin describes it as a surreal and magical experience. Photo courtesy of Austin Jenanyan. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 6/12/15.

The Owyhee Canyonlands Wilderness features unique rhyolite pinnacle formations known as “hoodoos,” cold-water streams, and canyons ranging in height from 250 to over 1000 feet. This remote and rugged landscape has outstanding opportunities for solitude, very low levels of human impacts, and primitive recreational opportunities.
The Bruneau-Jarbidge River System flows north from the mountains of northern Nevada through the basalt and rhyolite canyons of the Owyhee Uplands to the Snake River in southern Idaho. Nearly 40 floatable miles of the Bruneau River are designated as wild and scenic.
