The sous chef boards are intended to be mobile … and given to the chef’s assistant. They can chop the onion or slice the cucumber, and then carry their work back to the cook for further processing.
I started making these boards after watching how Velda’s sous chefs helped in the kitchen, and carried cutting boards around to find the right place to do their work.
Your mileage may vary, of course. But if they seem perfect for your kitchen – or your friend’s kitchen, then, please, come see me or send me an email!

I’m obsessed with it, actually. I’m working to create an inventory of 150 cutting boards, cheese boards and serving pieces so that when sales pick up, I won’t be constantly panicked with how I can keep up. Good plan.
The reality is I’m just now at 103 boards … and since today is the opening of Clovis’ Big Hat Days, it’s a sure bet that I won’t have 100 when the sun sets. That’s a good thing, right?
Cutting Board # 15 – 028. Cherry, Black Walnut, Hard Maple and Purpleheart end grain. 13″ x 19″ x 1-1/2″. The photo doesn’t do this board justice!

Cutting Board # 15 – 024. Spectacular color and grain patterns make this a board a visual treat. Jarrah, Hard Maple and Cherry end grain. 13″ x 19″ x 1-1/2″.
I have received many compliments on my price tags, which identify the woods in each board. Some have told me my prices are reasonable; others have definitely communicated the prices are too high. Who should I believe?

Cheese Board # 13 – 00. This is the board that started it all … the first cheese board I ever made, and gave to Velda for Christmas. Board has been resurfaced after 2 years of use, and the rubber feet have been replaced with the upgraded version I started using immediately after making the board. Goncalo Alves, Honey Locust, Jatoba, Black Walnut and Cherry edge grain. 10″ x 11″ x 1″.
A new display premieres today for my engraved boards. This is one of the examples I’ll be displaying.
It has been my # 1 request at craft fairs. Honest. People have been clamoring – clamoring! – for me to make cutting boards in the shape of a pig.
A pig.
I hate pigs.
I was in the pig business for about a minute, and did not find it to my liking. Here’s photographic proof that my sister and I were in the pig business … and got paid when we sold our stock at the St Joseph, MO stockyards. High living.
Here I am with Aunt Sis. Circa 1964. We always thought it was a happy day when you sold your pigs.
So, I’ve been out of the pig business for … 50 years (OMG) until today. Until the clamor.
This is how I take a pig to market in 2015. And … it worked. Sold in the first morning it was on display.
Part of the clamor came from Jan, a good friend of ours that makes blankets, kitchen towels & such for sale at many of the same craft fairs that Mrs M’s Handmade has been visiting. Jan had an uncle, and he made it a tradition to present a pig cutting board to each young member of the family when they got married.
The problem was that Jan was the youngest, and the tradition ended before she married her husband … so she never got her pig cutting board.
Until now!
Mrs M’s Handmade will be on the road this weekend, and for the next several weeks, at craft fairs. If you’re in the market for a pig, come see us!

Mr M’s Woodshop is an exhibitor at the upcoming Santa Clarita Home & Garden Show, produced by my hometown radio station, KHTS, 1220 on my AM dial.
The owner of the station, Carl Goldman, asked me to do an interview on the station about what I’m doing in the garage woodshop, and they have posted the interview on YouTube.
Multi-media star, that’s me. And I never even mentioned the blog….

It might be time to plan your trip to Stevens Trail on the North Fork of the American Wild and Scenic River.
The wildflowers were peaking this weekend and lots of people were out. It’s hard to believe that such a wild place is less than an hour from Sacramento.

Stevens Trail is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The trail is a popular year-round hiking trail in the lower elevations of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Historically, the trail connected the town of Iowa Hill with the city of Colfax, both in Placer County, California. The current trail extends 4.5 miles along the northwestern slope of the North Fork of the American River Canyon.
