Two elk smooch while enjoying the view at Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. Every autumn, elk gather for the rut or annual mating season. Bull elk can be heard calling to females with a crescendo of deep, resonant tones that rise rapidly to a high-pitched squeal before dropping to a series of grunts. Every February a rare phenomenon makes Horsetail Fall in California’s Yosemite National Park glow like fire. The sun has to hit the water just right, clouds can’t get in the way, and the photographer’s position must be in the right place at the right time. Photo taken Saturday, 2/11/17 by Ray Lee. Tweeted by the US Department of the Interior 2/13/17.

145 years ago this week, the world’s first national park, Yellowstone National Park, was created. For anyone who has visited this incredible land of fire and ice and marveled at the amazing wildlife and unique geologic features, there’s little doubt why Yellowstone is considered one of our nation’s greatest treasures. Last year, 4 million visitors saw what all of the fuss is about. When are you going? Photo by Michael Hardridge. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 3/1/17.

This picture of Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve in Colorado is a perfect combination of stone, sand, snow and light. The Sangre de Cristo (“Blood of Christ”) Mountains were named by early explorers for the crimson light that often appears on them at sunrise or sunset. The red color is especially vivid when the mountains and dunes are covered with snow. Photo by Patrick Myers, National Park Service. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 2/5/17.
You can never see too many sunsets on the Blue Ridge Parkway. After the first snow in Virginia this winter, photographer Brandon Dewey drove out to capture the sights. “The sky normally lights up once the sun dips behind the mountain ridges, but this night, there wasn’t that much color. About 20 minutes after sunset, I was just about to pack up my gear when the sky finally caught on fire for less than two minutes.” Photo by Brandon Dewey, Brandon Dewey Photography (www.bdeweyphoto.com).
