Doctor Who’s celebration of their 50th Anniversary this year (!) is beginning to fill out into something wonderful. Of course.
The actual anniversary special is scheduled to air on November 23; first read through was April 1. No foolin’.
We’ve been teased now with some great facts:
- The 10th Doctor, played by David Tennant, will return with one of his companions, played by Billie Piper. This will mark their first return to the series.
- Screen legend John Hurt will be a part of this episode.
- The villain of the piece will be the Zygons, not seen on Doctor Who since they appeared in the 1975 adventure with the 4th Doctor, “Terror of the Zygons.”
The Zygons are shape shifters, and it will be great to see the new transformation possible with today’s technology. Shape shifting just wasn’t a visual treat when the Zygons first appeared 38 years ago. Check out the animation, below … we’ve come a long way since 1975.

“They’re ruthless killers and they’ll stop at nothing!”
If you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m a fan of the BBC’s Doctor Who show. It’s the best Science Fiction television show currently being broadcast. THE BEST. You can catch the show on BBC America, or on DVD. Highly recommended!
Doctor Who is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and bringing back several actors and characters from the show’s past, to the delight of Whovians around the world.
Prior to this return, the Ice Warriors had the distinction of appearing in the most episodes of the classic show (which originally ran 1963 – 1989, before being successfully re-booted in 2005). They appeared in four stories with the 2nd and 3rd Doctors, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee.
The Ice Warriors spoke with a rather reptilian lisp back in the 60s. They are from Marsssss … and should return to earth in 2013’s 3rd episode, expected in April. They’ll meet Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor – in a submarine!

Ice Warriors also appeared with a related character, the Ice Lords.

The Daleks are one of the classic villains from the iconic BBC series, Doctor Who. They were originally conceived by sci-fi writer Terry Nation for the 1963 episode, The Daleks, and have appeared in many, many variations in many more episodes over the last 50 years. The design of the Daleks was done by Raymond Cusick, who died this week at age 84.
The Dalek’s electronic voice crying “Exterminate!” has become a pop culture touch point in England, and has spread world wide with the expanding notoriety of the show. The show is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
I first met the Daleks watching the London Olympics last summer. They peppered the opening ceremonies with cultural icons … including having the torch procession go by Daleks set in London. Just like on the TV show. It wasn’t until after I started Doctor Who, and became a fan, that I understood what those funny looking things were.
