Snow decorates the desert under a dreamy night sky at California’s Joshua Tree National Park. To survive, Joshua trees depend on perfect conditions, including a crisp winter freeze – researchers believe that freezing temperatures may first damage the growing end of a branch and then stimulate flowering, followed by branching. City Cats   Leave a comment

Partly within the Los Angeles city limits, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in California is home to a small population of mountain lions. National Park Service researchers have monitored more than 50 mountain lions in the park since 2002. Roaming freely, these big cats face unique challenges living so closely to urban areas. Voting 2016   Leave a comment

The bigger elections have always had a polling place in a neighbor’s garage, about a dozen houses away.

Not this time. We were consolidated into a larger precinct, and several hundred voters converged on the nearest park to do their duty as a citizen.

I didn’t even have to show an ID. I self-identified, signed in, and got a ballot.

California Is Colorful   Leave a comment

No need to adjust your screen, this technicolor terrain is Artist’s Pallette at Death Valley National Park in California. Aprons of blue, pink, green, purple, brown and black drape across the mountain front. Metals and minerals affected by oxidation and other chemical reactions created this unique landscape. “There’s just something about a winding road that ignites wanderlust,” says photographer Kathryn Dyer! At an impromptu stop in California’s Yosemite National Park, Kathryn captured this incredible shot of Half Dome shining golden from a beautiful alpenglow and framed by trees. Star Swirl   Leave a comment

Swirling star trails grace the night sky at Pinnacles National Park in California, the nation’s 59th and newest national park. 23 million years ago, volcanoes erupted, flowed and slid to form the park’s towering rock spires and rare talus caves that you can hike through today. Photographer Aron Cooperman journeyed 45 minutes through a cave to reach Bear Gulch Reservoir in time to capture this spellbinding scene. Photo by Aron Cooperman.
