America’s Best Idea   4 comments

Happy 99th birthday to National Park Service – America’s best idea! On this day in 1916, the National Park Service was created to care for the country’s special places. Pictured here is Lower Falls at Yellowstone National Park, our first national park. Photo by Kallem Phillips. Posted on Tumblr by the US Department of the Interior, 8/25/15.

Slinkard National Wilderness Area   Leave a comment

Slinkard Wilderness Study Area in California – taken by BLMer Bob Wick on July 20, 2015. The view – from a 9,000 foot peak just south of Monitor Pass – looks towards Topaz Lake, Nevada.

Although the winter had record low precipitation levels in the Sierra, moisture in late spring and summer has resulted in a good wildflower bloom. A note from Bob: I did not adjust the color saturation on this; it was just one of those “saturated” mornings!

Things Were Different Then   Leave a comment

Many Yosemite National Park visitors have heard of (as well as witnessed) the famous Firefall, a cherished tradition in which a bonfire was pushed over the edge of Glacier Point, creating a fiery spectacle. But did you know there was another Firefall? In the 1920s, there were a few evenings when the Firefall was relocated to a different Yosemite landmark: Half Dome. Using pack mules, Curry Co. staff would haul gallons of used motor oil up to the summit, ignite the face of Half Dome, and “Let the fire fall!” Photo courtesy of the Yosemite Research Library. Pesky Seagulls   Leave a comment

Aggressive small birds often get territorial around larger birds, as we saw earlier this week in the blackbird v. hawk picture. Here, 2 seagulls are annoying a bald eagle.
